Barcelona, which was facing a huge financial meltdown recently has reported a total loss of about 481 million euros. The report came out earlier in 2021. They witnessed a huge financial meltdown due to which Barcelona’s salary cap slashed amid financial struggles from 385 million euros to 97 million euros per season.

Barcelona’s spending limit now on salaries for the Barcelona season 2021-2022 has now been set at 85 million euros. The biggest reason behind such a slash in the salary cap was because the Catalan Club was unable to give a new contract to Lionel Messi. Every club has been assigned a different salary cap. These unique salary caps have been calculated by taking into consideration several factors such as costs, revenues, debts, etc.

The salary cap of Barcelona has reduced significantly indeed. Mainly because of the several financial struggles that are involved in the process. Their salary cap has become almost seven times smaller if you compare it to their rivals, Real Madrid. The Spanish league shared that their 2021-2022 salary limits were reduced to 97 million euros, which is about 285 million euros less than the salary cap that they received a year ago.

All of this happened just because of the simple fact that Catalan Club was unable to offer a new contract to Lionel Messi. This further led to Lionel Messi joining the Paris Saint-German football club. It has been reportedly claimed that Lionel Messi used to make 140 million euros nearly per season. Even though, Lionel Messi agreed to have half of his salary cut in order to stay in the Catalan Club. This still did not really help Barcelona a lot.

The salary cap of most clubs is roughly proportional to around 70% of the revenue of a club. Such adjustments are an integral part of the longstanding control measures of the Spanish league. With the sole aim to reduce the debts of a football club and too also keep them healthy in the financial sense.

This surprising news has certainly been making a great buzz all over social media. The fact that Barcelona would not be able to get Lionel Messi registering is quite astonishing for all football enthusiasts across the globe. This is going to happen after almost 17 seasons that the famous soccer persona has played from the Catalan Club’s side.

The Argentinian soccer player, Lionel Messi, whose contract expired on this year’s 1st July was going to join back with the club with a renewed contract. However, Barcelona’s salary cap slashed amid financial struggles. And this led to one thing and the other.

Following a fixed salary cap is quintessential to ensure FFP or Financial Fair Play. You can refer to salary cap as the maximum amount that that any club can spend on their players’ salary. In comparison to last years’ salary cap, the salary cap has been reduced by almost 50% for the top football or soccer clubs which includes Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid as well.
